Members of the Re/habilitation Team
Every specialist in our team has a specific role and professional tasks that require knowledge from various fields as well as specialized knowledge from their respective professional field.
The key team members, their qualifications and roles are:
- Specialists in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine – Physiatrists as leaders/coordinators, have an essential role in the team, their training and specific expertise allow them to diagnose and assess the degree of disability, which is a prerequisite for the safe implementation of recommended interventions. The primary responsibility of the physiatrist is to perform examinations, refer patients for additional diagnostic procedures, determine the treatment plan, coordinate the re/habilitation team, and interpret reports from other team members. They help the patient adjust to their disability in order to reduce functional impairment.
- Pediatric Specialists perform daily rounds of inpatient departments during which they perform physical examinations, analyze medical documentations, prescribe therapy and, if necessary, refer the patient for additional diagnostic procedures and consultations.
- Neuropsychiatry and Pediatric Neurology Specialists are essential team members who treat children and adolescents with neurological and psychiatric disorders, they detect diseases and damage to nervous system function in the early stages, as well as mental disorders in children and adolescents; they also treat epilepsy and assess electroencephalographic (EEG) reports.
- Re/habilitation Nurses provide preventive and restorative care – positioning in bed, skin care and prevention of skin damage and educate the patient and family on self–care.
- Physiotherapists evaluate, plan, and implement rehabilitation programs that improve or restore motor functions, maximize mobility, they implement physical treatment modalities and train the patient in everyday activities such as walking with the help of orthopedic aids.
- Occupational Therapists in rehabilitation medicine focus on maximizing functional independence in everyday activities (dressing, eating, personal hygiene). The therapeutic protocols include activities for improving hand function, fine motor skills, oculomotor coordination, communication skills and redirecting professional, recreational, and social activities.
- Speech Therapists assess and treat dysfunctions in expressive and receptive speech, motor planning and speech production. They work on preventing, early detection and diagnosing speech and language disorders.
- Special Educators work on preventing, early detection and diagnosing visual, auditory, sensorimotor and behavioral disorders; they also implement specific treatment methods during the process of habilitation and rehabilitation of individuals with these types of disorders.
- Social Workers work on strengthening the skills of affected/injured person in adapting to the social/work environment in order to facilitate full integration and social functioning. The social worker prepares reports and gives their opinion on the patient’s social status based on their social history and cooperation with the Social Work Center and other relevant institutions.
- Clinical Psychologists assess cognitive dysfunctions, the psychological impact of the disability and motivation. In addition, psychologists have a leading role in promoting healthy behaviors and treating behavioral disorders caused by physical or mental health imbalances.
- Dentists – Preventive and Pediatric Dentistry Specialists prevent, diagnose and treat diseases, injuries and anomalies of the teeth, mouth and jaws; they aim to improve oral health and provide emergency dental care for children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders.
Physicians
Medical Examination
During the first examination, the physician gathers information from the parents (the mother’s condition during pregnancy, information regarding birth and risk factors at birth), they observe the child’s spontaneous behavior, examine muscle tone and reflexes, perform postural reactions which are a very sensitive indicator of the central nervous system’s function; they assess the child’s functional and motor status, set a diagnosis and determine the necessary treatments for the child. Follow–up examinations enable continuous monitoring of the child’s psychomotor development.
Kinesiotherapy
The habilitation of children with cerebral palsy primarily includes kinesiotherapy, but also other types of physical therapy (electrotherapy, thermotherapy, biofeedback).
In kinesiotherapy, physiotherapists apply appropriate treatment through the facilitation of normal psychomotor development and/or stimulation of reflex locomotion (Bobath, M.D. and Vojta, M.D. methods of treatment).
We also provide hydrotherapy services to patients hospitalized at our Hospital (Hubbard tank).
The habilitation of children with delayed psychomotor development includes educating the parents in stimulative work and appropriate care for the child at home.
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy involves individual work with the child; group therapy is also conducted for certain age groups.
Treatment includes applying general and specialized occupational therapy procedures, techniques and methods for:
- Preventing and correcting pathological patterns, as well as stimulating, adopting and automating normal motor patterns and sensorimotor development;
- Developing hand and palm functions (stimulating and practicing grasp, manipulative skills, gross and fine visual–motor coordination, dexterity and precision, unilateral and bimanual activities, practicing graphomotor skills);
- Sensory integration (vestibular, proprioceptive, tactile, auditory, and visual stimulation);
- Practicing perceptual functions (optical, acoustic, tactile);
- Training and correcting self–care activities for everyday life;
- Pre–professional training.
Special Education and Speech Therapy Services
The Special Educator at the Hospital works on identifying, diagnosing, and treating cognitive disorders in children (perception, thinking, memory, learning, and reasoning disorders), as well as psychomotor disorders — characteristic of certain syndromes and conditions accompanied by motor and mental deficits. Within this context, the Special Educator works on the habilitation, rehabilitation and education of children with cerebral palsy, as well as other developmental and neurological disorders.
The Special Educator plans and organizes special education treatment based on the assessment of the disorder, depending on whether it involves praxis disorders, motor debilitation, developmental discord disorders, intellectual insufficiency, etc.
Special education treatments are realized through various special education procedures while working with children:
- Sensory integration (encouraging the development of sensory integration in children, conducted in the Hospital’s sensory room);
- Psychomotor development re–education in special education rooms;
- Educational revision for preschool and school–aged children.
Through educational procedures, the Special Educator also organizes and conducts certain forms of occupational therapy, at the Day Hospital, for adults using our services.
The Special Educator is a member of the Hospital’s professional team and, in addition to the above, participates in preparing special education reports and advisory work.
The Speech Therapist at the Hospital focuses on the prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment of speech and language disorders in children with cerebral palsy and other developmental and neurological disorders.
The Speech Therapist advises parents (guardians) on working with patients outside the Hospital.
The Speech Therapist uses various diagnostic tests, educational kits and speech therapy devices during his work.
The Speech Therapist is a member of the Hospital’s professional team and participates in preparing professional reports.
